Technology
Technology Department
At Wayland Public Schools, we view technology as a vital catalyst for curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Our mission is to integrate digital tools in a way that is both purposeful and age-appropriate, ensuring students develop the skills necessary to navigate a global society.
Elementary Level: Building a Foundation
In our elementary schools, technology serves as a supplemental tool to enhance core instruction.
-
Purposeful Integration: Students use shared devices for targeted literacy and math support, creative projects, and digital citizenship lessons.
-
Balanced Digital Diet: We prioritize social-emotional growth and face-to-face interaction, ensuring screen time is intentional and instructional.
-
Supervised Exploration: All digital activities are conducted in a managed environment with robust filtering to ensure a safe, age-appropriate experience.
Secondary Level: Universal Access & Personalized Learning
As students transition to secondary education, technology becomes a central component of their daily academic life through our Universal Access Initiative. This program provides every student with a dedicated device to create a consistent Personalized Learning Environment (PLE).
Wayland Middle School: Chromebook Program
At the Middle School, students are provided with a Chromebook. These devices are perfectly suited for the collaborative nature of the middle school curriculum, allowing students to:
-
Seamlessly access Google Workspace for Education.
-
Engage in real-time collaborative writing and research.
-
Develop foundational digital organization and communication skills.
Wayland High School: MacBook Air Program
At the High School, the program scales up to meet the demands of advanced coursework. Every student is provided with a MacBook Air. This transition supports:
-
High-Level Creation: Industry-standard software for media production, coding, and complex multitasking.
-
Academic Continuity: A powerful workstation that handles the rigorous data and processing needs of honors and AP-level curriculum.
-
College Readiness: Preparing students for the professional-grade hardware they will encounter in higher education and the workforce.
Responsibility & Continuity
Students in grades 6–12 carry their assigned devices between school and home, fostering digital stewardship. To support our families, Wayland Public Schools offers an Annual Device Protection Plan to cover accidental damage and ensures that "loaner" devices are available so learning is never interrupted.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that affords parents the right to have access to their children’s education records, the right to seek to have the records amended, and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records.
